VPGC Code for Animal Welfare

VPGC recognizes Animal welfare is an important aspect of any successful livestock operation.  Not only do animals deserve to be protected from unnecessary suffering, those kept in optimum conditions will thrive.  The Code of Best Practices recommended by VPGC incorporate the ideal of the following freedoms:

1. Freedom from Hunger & Thirst - By having ready access to fresh water and a healthy diet. A minimum of two routine checks by the Grower insures continuous supplies of feed and water.

2. Freedom from Discomfort - By providing an appropriate environment, including shelter and a comfortable resting area.

3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease - By prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.

4. Freedom to Express Normal Behavior - By providing sufficient space and proper facilities.

5. Freedom from Fear and Distress - By insuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
